PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Students will study the science involved, and develop the skills necessary, for the care of the hair, nails, and skin. Areas of study include: cutting, styling and waving of the hair, facial treatment, and application of cosmetics. Human anatomy, physiology, histology, and bacteriology are covered in course content. Two high school student scheduling options are available: 1) Students begin the summer before their junior year (ten weeks) and in the fall three hours per school day are scheduled. The summer before their senior year is scheduled with the Cosmetology School and the MPATC (six to ten weeks) and that fall (as seniors) the student is required to schedule 3 hours per day until completion. 2) Students begin the summer before their senior year (ten weeks) and in the fall 3 hours per day are scheduled. Upon graduation from high school, students will become full-time students at MJ Murphy Beauty College and will pay tuition until completion of the 1500-hour program. For both options, students are required to complete an application registration (requires a small fee) with the State of Michigan, Board of Cosmetology, before entry into the program. A total of 6 credits is earned upon satisfactory completion.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM:
This course is taught at the MJ Murphy Beauty College in Mt. Pleasant. The college is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences, and certified by the U.S. Dept. of Education. The Cosmetology School requires students to furnish their own uniforms and shoes, and to pay the state registration fee. Students become eligible to work with patrons in the beauty college after satisfactory completion of 350 clock hours. At the time of the completion of the 1500 clock attendance hours, the student will be eligible to take the State Board Examination.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES: Opportunities are available for students to improve their occupational knowledge, skills and leadership through CTSO membership, competitions, community volunteer projects, student-led meetings, and/or intra-curricular activities. In a positive experiential learning environment, students develop leadership and management skills, responsibility and self-confidence, communication and decision making skills, good citizenship and respect for other cultures, as well as a basic understanding of parliamentary procedures. These activities help students set and realize their career goals, and instill a sense of the duty and responsibility associated with being a role model, mentor, volunteer and future community leader.
